Just BEach Favorite – Gibney Beach

March 27, 2012

We’re really digging on Gibney Beach lately… I’ll go out on a limb and say that the tire swing recently added by a good samaritan might have something to do with it,  but truly, Gibney (sometimes referred to as Oppenheimer Beach) is a gem among the many gems that are our St John beaches.

Gibney Beach has an interesting history, including the reasons it came by both of its monikers – notably, the Oppenheimer name derives from the sometime residents of the beach, Robert Oppenheimer, his wife Kitty, and their daughter Toni.  The house the Oppenheimer family built on the beach is now maintained by the Virgin Islands Government, and is available for community use for a nominal fee.

Parking for Gibney/Oppenheimer is limited – there are three parking spaces at the top left of the drive, otherwise it’s necessary to park at Peace Hill and walk down.

For more information on this lovely beach, check out our friends at the St John Beach Guide.  Their website offers great coverage of the beach’s history, as well as an informative section on snorkeling opportunities on that side of Hawksnest Bay.
