Salomon Beach

June 8, 2011

Salomon Beach, St John USVI

Salomon Beach is one of my favorites – located on Caneel Bay, and accessible only via the Lind Point trail, it’s hardly ever crowded, making it the perfect spot to unwind.  For anyone exploring St John without a car, it quickly becomes evident that a taxi ride is required for most beaches, but Salomon and it’s neighbor Honeymoon Beach offer great alternatives within a reasonable walk from town.

Snorkeling is best on either end of Salomon, but particularly on the west end, closer to Caneel Bay Resort.  Much of the reef is fairly shallow, so it’s important to be aware of your depth and proximity to the reef to avoid inflicting any damage on the delicate ecosystem.  It’s also important to keep an eye out for boat traffic, as this is a popular location for day sails and snorkel trips.  There are well marked dinghy channels on the left side of each beach.

To start your hike out to Salomon, just look for the Lind Point trail head behind the Virgin Islands National Park Visitors’ Center, in Cruz Bay.

Snorkeling in the reef between Salomon Bay and Honeymoon Beach is pure joy. The shallow water allows easy movement perfect for all skill level. Just be careful when the water becomes to shallow, you might step on the fragile corals.
